Chiropractic Care in Raleigh, NC

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care focuses on how the joints of the spine and body move and line up. When a joint is not moving or positioned normally, it can irritate nearby nerves and tissues and produce pain. A chiropractor locates those problem areas and uses controlled adjustments to restore normal motion and take pressure off the nerves.

At Raleigh Chiropractic & Wellness, Dr. Michael Hoehle practices corrective, structural chiropractic. The goal is not only to help you feel better today, but to correct the underlying problem so it is less likely to keep coming back, and to get you back to all of your normal daily activities.

Common symptoms

Patients most often come in with lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, pain from disc bulges and herniations, whiplash after a car accident, joint pain, tendinitis, and wrist, elbow, or arm pain.

How Dr. Hoehle evaluates it

Every new patient starts with a physical exam. Dr. Hoehle uses palpation (careful hands-on assessment of the spine and joints), muscle strength testing, and X-rays taken on site. In his experience, X-rays are the best tool for seeing exactly where to adjust and how much degeneration has occurred, which helps him treat both safely and effectively.

Treatment approaches we may consider

Depending on what the exam and X-rays show, care may include chiropractic adjustments, non-surgical spinal decompression, Piezowave2 shockwave therapy, and Active Release Technique soft tissue work. Dr. Hoehle also adjusts extremities (shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles) on almost every patient, not just the spine.

Because this is a corrective practice, treatment does not stop at the table. Dr. Hoehle teaches home exercises, traction, stretches, and postural retraining so patients can maintain the correction between visits and after care ends. After the recommended course of care, he takes follow-up X-rays to document the structural change.

Worried about the popping sound? Two things help. First, the sound is simply gas exchange inside the joint capsule as the joint moves; it is not bones cracking. Second, for patients who still prefer to avoid it, Dr. Hoehle uses drop-table and instrument adjusting, which accomplish the adjustment without the pop.

Who is (and who is not) a good candidate

Chiropractic care may help people whose pain traces to how the joints of the spine and body are moving and aligned; the conditions listed above are the ones Dr. Hoehle sees most. It is not the right starting point for everyone: a suspected broken bone belongs in the emergency room, not a chiropractic office, and Dr. Hoehle refers out any case that needs medical evaluation first. If an exam suggests your problem is not one chiropractic can help, he will tell you and point you to the right provider.

What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit includes a consultation, a full exam, any necessary X-rays, and treatment. Dr. Hoehle walks you through what he found and what he recommends before anything begins.

Visit length and course of care

There is no standard number of visits, and this office does not promise one. After your exam and X-rays, Dr. Hoehle designs recommendations for your specific case; every spine and every patient is different. Plan for your first visit to take 45 to 60 minutes; follow-up visits are shorter.

Insurance and payment

Insurance participation varies by plan; the office verifies your in-network or out-of-network benefits before care begins. Auto accident, personal injury, and workers’ compensation cases are accepted. Payment options include credit and debit cards, cash, checks, CareCredit, HSA/FSA, and in-house payment plans. Self-pay pricing is provided on request.

When to seek urgent medical care

Go to the emergency room or call 911 rather than booking a chiropractic visit if you have pain after a serious accident or fall that could involve a broken bone, new loss of bowel or bladder control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, rapidly worsening weakness in an arm or leg, or severe pain with fever. These need immediate medical evaluation.
